Congresses, symposia, conferences, book launches, exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, visits and pilgrimages are some of the activities that have been organised by the University of Deusto. Theseare aimed at discovering themeaningthat Saint Ignatius's message, the most universal Basque of all times, has today. And according to the Rector Jaime Oraá, "the values defended by Ignatius and Xavier- the promotion of faith and justice, the intercultural dialoge and interreligious dialogue- are of great relevance today. Therefore, 2006 is a good opportunity to recall these two great men. To this respect, Jaime Oraá has explained how meaningful it is for the University to commemorate these events, since "the Company of Jesus was born at the University of Paris, and Saint Ignatius claimed that jesuits should be educated at the best universities because, as he said, "to change the world, you have to know it first".
Apart from these activities that will be held at Deusto, the Castle of Javier in Navarre will be hosting nearly one hundredth events throughout 2006. The main event will be held on 7 April, the date of the 500th anniversary of Xabier's birth, which will be attended by the King and Queen of Spain. A number of events will take place in Loyola (Azpeitia) in July. A series of concerts and the publication of a book about the sanctuary-basilica are some ofthe scheduled events.
Also, the Bilbao 700 Foundation has joined these events with the organisation of several concerts related to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xavier. The former, on 4 April, is the "Concierto barroco en la ciudad prohibida", the music of the Jesuit missions in China (18th C); the latter, on 28 April, on "Obras de grandes compositores del barroco hispano dedicadas a San Francisco Javier y a San Ignacio de Loyola"; the following one, held in November, with the opera "Apoteosos sive consecratio SS. Ignatii et Francisci Xavierri" by J.H. Kapsberger. Finally, on 17 June, the show "Bilbao: Puerta de Oriente" will be held in front of the University of Deusto.
