The University of Deusto celebrates the 50th anniversary of the treaties that gave rise to the current European Union

Last 18 and 19 December, the University of Deusto, throughits Faculty of Philosophy and Arts research team, 'The Internationalisation of processes', held a Conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome in 2005, one of which meant the creation of the European Economic Community (EEC). Thus, this marked the origin of the current European Union. This conference was attended by relevant figures such as the former Chairman of the European Parliament, José María Gil Robles, who gave their personal view on the subject.

The aim of this 'Commemorative conference on the signing of the Treaties of Rome, 1957-2007' was to conduct a global assessment of the treaties and the historical circumstances from that date until today, without forgetting certain aspects regarding the new concept of European citizenship.

Topics covered during this conference included the origins of European construction: Past and Present of the European Union, and 'Los costes de la no Europa: realizaciones concretas y retos presentes del proyecto europeo'. The second day of this conference, María Jesús Cava Mesa,Director of the History Department, introduced the paper given by José María Gil-Robles y Gil-Delgado, Former Chairman of the European Parliament and Former Chairman of the International European Movement, entitled 'Medio siglo de construcción de la paz'. Aitor Ibarrola, introduced the paper by Francisco Aldecoa, Professor of International Relations, and Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology at the Complutense University in Madrid, entitled 'El proyecto político europeo'.
