Opening of the '9th International Congress on the Basque Exile'

The ninth International Congress on the Basque Exile (organised by the Hamaika Bide association and the University of Deusto), will be held in San Sebastian next 5, 6 and 7 November. This year, it will focus on the topic 'Exile, theatre, theatricality'. This meeting will bring together experts from several countries, and it will examine the contribution of playwrights, actors, actresses and professionals from the Basque and Spanish theatre world, who were forced to go into exile after the civil war.This congress seeks to recognise, recover and, in some cases, discover them, placing special emphasis on the work carried out by the Basque theatre representatives in exile.

The aim of this meeting is to gain a deeper ?knowledge of one of the least researched approaches to exile:drama creation and theatre activity?.Participants will include leading Basque figures or closely linked to the Basque Country such as Eduardo Ugarte, Cecilia G. de Guilarte, Telesforo Monzón, Pepita Embil, Martin Ugalde, Isidoro de Fagoaga, José Bergamín or Alfonso Sastre, the latter of whom will be paid homage in the town of Hondarribia, together with José Martín Elizondo and Ricardo Doménech.


Sessions will cover the following topics:playwrights, directors and actors/actresses, plastic arts (scenography, costume design), and music, critics and publishing companies, the Basque theatre and exile. ?Therefore, the idea is to examine the theatre activity from a global perspective, trying to cover its different sides?.Iñaki Beti Sáez (PhD and Lecturer at the University of Deusto) and Mari Carmen Gil Fombellida (PhD and Lecturer of the Performing Arts Workshop in San Sebastian), both of them members of Hamaika Bide Elkartea, will act as coordinators and will be responsible for the congress minutes.The scientific committee will be made up of Manuel Aznar Soler (Autonomous University of Barcelona), José Ángel Ascunce Arrieta (University of Deusto), Nigel Dennis (University of Saint Andrews University College, Scotland), Ricardo Doménech (Royal High School of Dramatic Art), José Ramón Zabala Agirre (Hamaika Bide Elkartea), Iñaki Beti Sáez (University of Deusto) and César Oliva (University of Murcia).

Homage to Alfonso Sastre in Hondarribia

The events will start on Wednesday, 5th November, in the morning, in the Salon de Grados Hall, University of Deusto in San Sebastian, and they will end on 7th November in the afternoon in Hondarribia.On 5th and 6th November, in the afternoon, the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre will also host the corresponding series of paper sessions.During the closing ceremony, which will be held at Hondarribia?s Town Hall, homage will be paid to playwright Alfonso Sastre, to the stage director from Getxo José Martín Elizondo, and to the theatre critic and researcher Ricardo Doménech (Professor of Playwriting and Stage Direction, High School of Dramatic Art in Madrid).
