The Neuropsychology of Severe Medical Conditions research group from the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Deusto, headed by Dra Ojeda, has jointly with ASPARBI, SOPARA and researchers from Osakidetza published the article entitled “Predictors of health-related quality of life in Parkinson’s disease: the impact of overlap between health-related quality of life and clinical measures” in Quality of Life Research journal.

In this article, the authors reveal the results of the research conducted by Dra. Ibarretxe-Bilbao where the influence of motor and non-motor symptoms in the Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of Parkinson’s disease patients has been analyzed. They suggest that their quality of life related to health was impacted by fatigue, anxiety, motor symptoms and neurocognition.

An added value of this research lies in the fact that, while most of the studies only analyze the overall HRQoL, Deusto's research study assesses 8 dimensions of the functioning and well-being of the people affected by Parkinson disease; mobility, daily life activities, emotional well-being, stigma, social support, cognition, communication and body upset. Furthermore, the research shows the importance of both identifying and monitoring the overlapping elements of HRQoL as well as their clinical measures in order to give an accurate interpretation to the results.

The authors participating in the research from the Neuropsychology of Severe Medical Conditions research group from the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Health at the University of Deusto are the following: Itsasne Sánchez-Luengos, Olaia Lucas Jíménez, Natalia Ojeda, Javier Peña Lasa, Naroa Ibarretxe-Bilbao
