The international system is going through a time of profound transformations that threaten the effectiveness of its laws. In a context marked by geopolitical fragmentation and the return of power politics, the International Relations degree at the University of Deusto is organising an academic forum to examine the challenges currently facing Public International Law.

The impact of global transformation on the legal system

The event will examine how shifts in the balance of power, humanitarian crises, and international conflicts are reshaping the functioning of the international legal system. Through a dialogue among specialists, it will address the current tension between legal norms and power dynamics, analysing whether present challenges stem from regulatory gaps or from the re-emergence of power-driven logics that challenge multilateralism and global governance.

Critical perspectives on the future of International Law

The meeting will provide a forum for critical analysis to identify the normative, institutional and political challenges facing the system in a context of geopolitical fragmentation. The debate will explore the extent to which International Law can adapt and remain relevant in the face of the evolving world order. Within this framework, various lines of research will be examined, ranging from the role of individuals and new forms of strategic litigation to the protection of human rights in the context of technological tools, as well as specific challenges related to gender and peacebuilding.

The meeting, moderated by Steffen Bay Rasmussen, coordinator of the degree, will feature a panel of specialists who will provide a range of perspectives:

-Natale Serón (Deusto): Specialist in strategic human rights litigation.
-Iker Zirion Landaluce (UPV/EHU): Expert in peacebuilding and gender.
-Ander Gutiérrez-Solana Journoud (UPV/EHU): Specialist in global governance and the environment.
-María López Belloso (Deusto): Researcher in transitional justice and technology.

The session will conclude with a question-and-answer segment to encourage an exchange of ideas with the audience. Admission is free, subject to prior registration.
