On 15 July, Deusto hosted the EURASYLUM II seminar, an academic event dedicated to analysing asylum and migration policies in today’s European context.
The seminar was opened by Joana Abrisketa, who welcomed the participants on behalf of the Institute. Throughout the morning, leading experts in International and European Law delivered a series of lectures addressing today’s legal challenges surrounding international protection.
Key topics included:
- María Nagore (University of Deusto) analysed the ambassador’s role in transferring applicants for international protection to Spain, following Supreme Court ruling 199/2024.
- Juan Ruiz (University of Granada) explored the complex legal status of asylum seekers under the European Convention on Human Rights.
- Paula García Andrade (Autonomous University of Madrid) reflected on the externalisation of international protection from the perspective of international and European law.
- Cristina Churruca (University of Deusto) concluded the series of talks with a presentation on the hotspot approach and the growing normalisation of the state of exception in EU asylum policy.
After a lively debate, the seminar concluded with a final session of conclusions and closing remarks. This activity is part of the research project “The European Pact on Migration and Asylum and the Mediterranean States in the Post-COVID Context” (reference PID2020 113999RB-I00), which aims to provide critical insight into the challenges and responses of the European migration framework.
