The University of Deusto launches the first collective and multilingual novel open to the public through the internet.

The Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at the University of Deusto, under the sponsorship of Banco Santander and the collaboration of El Correo Digital newspaper, has launched its first collective, multilingual (Spanish, Basque and English) and hypertextual novel in wiki format, accessible through the Internet and open to the public. You can access the wikinovel at: www.wikinovela.org, and to participate you only have to register as a user. Once registered, users will be able to continue any of the three beginnings of the novel, improve what others have written or add new ideas to any of the stories.

To give impetus to this initiative, and to motivate participants, three well-known writers have been in charge of writing the beginnings in each of the languages: Juan José Millás for Spanish, Jon Arretxe for Basque and Espido Freire for English. There are three different but related stories, which make up a single novel that will be developed with the users? contributions. The deadline to participate in the first stage of this wikinovel is 24 July.

There were already previous proposals for online collaborative creation, and even some of them had been developed by UD, but this initiative is original because it is a multilingual project that brings together Spanish, Basque and English in three related stories in a single novel. Also, unlike previous projects that were aimed at a smaller number of people, this is open to the general public. In addition, the Wiki technology, which is also used in the Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia, allows direct participation, without intermediaries, between different creators to change a single text.

The outcome will be a novel written by different authors, with many interwoven plots and, above all, the opportunity for readers and writers to collaborate in the creation of a work of art.
