On 21 October 2019, the University of Deusto hosted a conference on the topic of “orphan” medicines in collaboration with CIC bioGUNE, CIBERER, the Platform Malalties Minoritàries and the Institut Catalá de la Salut.
“Orphan” medicines are those medicines aimed to treat diseases that, due to their rarity, are not attractive to the pharmaceutical industry for financial reasons. The industry is reluctant to develop them since the capital invested in research and development would not be recovered back in the product. More than 7,000 rare diseases affect 5 of every 10,000 people and about 80% have a genetic origin, affecting 3-4% of newborns.
