On 17 October 2019, DEUSTO Institute of Drug Dependencies, in collaboration with the Basque Government, organized the 26th Symposium on Advances in Drug Dependence focusing on the topic Substance-free addictions and other impulse control disorders.
The event was opened by Josu Solabarrieta, Dean of DEUSTO Faculty of Psychology and Education, and Juan José Aurrekoetxea, Director of Public Health and Addictions Department of the Basque Government.
Among the speakers there were Mark Griffith, Psychologist and Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction at the Nottingham Trent University and Director of the International Gaming Research Unit; Ana Estévez, Professor and Researcher at DEUSTO Personality, Evaluation and Treatments Department and member of the Advisory Council of Responsible Gambling (CAJR); and Enrique Echeburua, Basque Research Award 2017, whose research focuses on the area of violence against couples, sexual assaults, addiction to gambling and addiction without substance and anxiety disorders.
During the seminar professional experts, researchers and academics dealt with topics such as the elements that make gambling addictive, the addiction to video games, the addiction to buying or the addition to food. They also discussed the morbidity associated with addiction, the gender perspective in addictions and the challenges in prevention and treatment.
