Deusto examines the Jesuit influence in the 'forbidden city'

Last 4 April, Philippe Lécrivain, Lecturer in History of Christianity at the Jesuit Faculties in Paris (Centre Svres) attendedthe Deusto Forum with a lecture on 'Les missions jésuites en Chine et sur son pourtour aux XVIe-XVIIIe sicles' ('Las misiones jesuitas en China y su entorno, durante los siglos XVI al XVIII'), within the 'Jesuits: one mission, one project' cycle. The previous day, Alberto Nuñez had lectured on 'Jesuitas en la Ciudad prohibida'.

The lecture given by Alberto Núñez was part of the events held on 4 April, with the concert 'Concierto Barroco en la Ciudad Prohibida. Las Músicas de las Misiones Jesuitas en China (siglo XVIII)', by de 'Ensemble XVIII-21 Musique des Lumires', and conducted by J.C. Fisch. This concert, held at the Encarnación Church, was part of the activities organised by Bilbao 700 Foundation.

Apart from these activities, which will take place in Deusto and Javier (Navarra), nearly one hundred events will be held throughout 2006. The main event will be held on 7 April,commemoratingthe 500th anniversary celebration of Xavier's birth, which will be attended by the King and Queen of Spain. In Loyola (Azpeitia), these events will be held in July, some of which include a series of concerts and the publication of a book about the sanctuary-basilica.

In addition, the Bilbao 700 Foundation has joined these events with a concert series dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier. The former, will be held on 4 April and the latter, on 28 April, on 'Obras de grandes compositores del barroco hispano dedicadas a San Francisco Javier y a San Ignacio de Loyola'. In November, an opera entitled 'Apoteosis sive consecratio SS. Ignatii et Francisci Xavierii' by J.H. Kapsberger will be held. Finally, on 17 June, the 'Bilbao: Puerta de Oriente' show will take place in front of the University of Deusto.
