The University of Deusto once again joins in the celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, reaffirming its commitment to inclusion, diversity, and the respect of everyone’s rights. This year, the University is focusing on people with low vision, a group that is increasingly present within the university community.
Genetic and degenerative retinal diseases, which have no treatment and progressively lead to blindness, currently affect around 2% of the population. Aware of this reality, Deusto has joined the "I have low vision"campaign, which aims to raise awareness within the university community about the challenges faced by those who, while not completely blind, experience severe visual impairment. The initiative aims to break down stereotypes, foster empathy, and promote more accessible environments for all.
The university as a driver of social transformation
Since 2010, the University of Deusto, through its Diversity Unit, has been part of the CRUE's Network of University Support Services for People with Disabilities (SAPDU). This network brings together the disability support services of Spanish universities to coordinate efforts and standards, ensuring that inclusion is a reality across all aspects of university life: from access and retention in studies to full participation in academic, cultural, and social activities.
Within this framework, Deusto has joined the CRUE Manifesto, published on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which highlights the importance of ensuring universal accessibility, personalised adjustments, university staff training, awareness-raising against ableism, and the active participation of people with disabilities in shaping inclusive policies.
The University of Deusto believes that universities are essential spaces for generating knowledge, fostering citizenship, and building a just future. For this reason, all its actions are aimed at celebrating diversity, ensuring no one is left behind, and making each academic achievement contribute to a more inclusive and supportive society. The institution promotes innovation, research and knowledge transfer to improve the lives of people with disabilities and break down structural barriers.
Through these initiatives, the University of Deusto strengthens its position as a benchmark in educational inclusion, emphasising that building an accessible and fair environment depends on the commitment of the entire university community, public administrations, social organisations, and society as a whole.
