Blessed Francisco Garate was born on 3 February 1857 at Erre-Karte farmhouse in Loyola-Azpeitia. He was the caretaker and sacristan at the University of Deusto for 41 years; he was beatified by John Paul II on 6 October 1985.
To commemorate the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Blessed Francisco Garate?s birth, the Company of Jesus has organised a number of events as a tribute to him. The first one will be a mass offered next 2 February at the San Sebastian campus. The following day, on Saturday 3 February, a mass will becelebrated at 12:15 pm, in the Gothic Chapel at the University of Deusto, Bilbao campus; on that same day, another mass will be offered at Loyola?s Basilica at 18:00 pm. Then, at 19:00 pm, the reopening of Erre-Karte farmhouse, Blessed Garate?s birthplace, will be held.
As for Father Pedro Arrupe, he was born in Bilbao 100 years ago on 14 November 1907; and in 1965, he was elected Jesuit Father Genenral of the Company of Jesus. He died in Rome in 1991. The main events to commemorate these anniversaries will be held at the end of 2007.
