2219 students graduated from the University of Deusto last academic year 2005-2006

The graduation ceremoniesfor thenew graduates from the University of Deusto started last 27 January, on its patron saint's day, St. Thomas Aquinas, and they will continue until 27 March. Last Saturday, 3 February, the Faculty of Law graduation ceremony was held. During the 2005-2006 academic year, 2,219 students graduated with BA, Diploma and PhD degrees. 2,183 of these are the new BA and Diploma graduates, 249 of whom are from the Law Faculty, 80 from Philosophy and Arts, 298 from Philosophy and Education Sciences, 144 from Economics and Business Administration, La Comercial Faculty, 16 from Theology, 32 from Political Sciences and Sociology, 825 from theEngineering Faculty, 164 from Economics and Business Administration at ESTE Faculty, San Sebastian, 116 from Humanities and 54 from the Tourism Schoolat San Sebastian campus.

In addition, 36 new PhD students defended their doctoral theses last year, 2 of whom were Latin American students, who achieved this degree thanks to Unesco Chair in Human Resources. Last year, 198 students started the last university cycle with the courses offered within the 13 PhD programmes at this University, and 58 PhD students submitted their doctoral thesis.

It was with these new PhDs and BAs in Theology that the University of Deusto opened the first of its graduation ceremonies, which was held in the Main Ceremonial Hall, respecting the same the protocol and tradition for more than 100 years. This ceremony was presided over by the Rector of the University of Deusto, Jaime Oraá, together with all his rectoral team, deans and the senate. It also included the presentation of the UD End-of-Degree Awards to last year?s most outstanding students, as well as the Mediaeta and Lambarri Foundation Awards to the best students from the 8 degree programmes at the Faculty of Engineering.

The UD End-of-Degree Awards were presented to 28 graduates, the best academic records in their year. Apart from a Diploma certificate, they were also granted enrolment fee funding to pursue PhD studies in the case of BA graduates, or to undertake second-cycle studies in the case of Diploma graduates.

Awarded students this year included: Faculty of Law: Maitane Murga, Idoia Vergara and Asier Fernández; Faculty of Philosophy and Arts: Leire Olabaría, Guillermo Gómez and María Amaya Ormaechea; Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences (FICE): Fermín Goñi, Ana Gallego, Miriam Vegas, Beatriz Alonso, Marta Ferrero and María José Celorio; Economics and Business Administration, La Comercial Faculty: Sonia Barquín; Faculty of Theology: Juan Alberto Illana and Elsa María Jorge; Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology: Vanesa Fernández; Faculty of Engineering: Raúl de Benito, Imanol Fernández, Iker Alonso, Mireya Santos, Garakoitz Balbas and Iraide Ruiz; Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, ESTE: Oroitz Lafuente and María Edith Astudillo; Faculty of Humanities: Itziar Otegui; School of Tourism (Bilbao): Nagore García; School of Secretarial Studies: Paula López; Higher Institute of Religious Sciences: Alfonso Blázquez.

Likewise, this year, the Mendieta and Lambarri Foundation presented for the first time the Awards to students for special achievement in the different degrees at the Faculty of Engineering: Raúl de Benito, Mireya Santos, Javier Zalduendo, Iraide Ruiz, Iván Martínez, Silvia Lacarra, Garikoitz Balbas and Leire Fernández de Retana.

After these two graduation ceremonies, the schedule for the Graduation ceremonies of the rest of Faculties and Schools will be as follows: Philosophy and Arts (Bilbao), 10 February; Philosophy and Education Sciences (Bilbao) and Economics and Business Administration-ESTE (San Sebastian), on 17 February; Economics and Business Administration-La Comercial (Bilbao) and Humanities (San Sebastian), on 24 February; Political Sciences and Sociology (Bilbao) and Tourism and Social Work (San Sebastian), on 3 March; Engineering, on 10 March; Tourism (Bilbao) and Secretarial Studies, on 27 March.
