On 23 September, the European Commission presented the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact, which aims to establish a common policy for the management of migration in Europe. The document acknowledges that the current system no longer works and that, over the last five years, the EU has not been able to address it.
The long-awaited new proposal for a Pact, not yet ratified, promised to address these shortcomings. It promised to leave behind a policy based on dissuasion, containment and criminalisation of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. But it is neither more humane nor more humanitarian. It is a new disappointment, and another lost opportunity?
On 17 December, the eve of International Migrants' Day, the Institute for Human Rights, in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), held a seminar to analyse this Pact and its consequences on the lives of thousands of people who seek only protection and security.
To this end, the Institute will have the participation of Raquel González, Head of External Relations at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF); Joana Abrisqueta, Doctor in Law and expert in European Policy at the University of Deusto; Cristina Churruca, PhD in International Relations and Director of the NOHA Master's degree at the University of Deusto; and Patricia Simón, journalist specialising in migration and refuge. The seminar will be held at 19:00.
