The Horizon 2020 Project Waste4Think (coordinated by the University of Deusto) has been included in a Gendered Innovations case study. The study analyses how EU Horizon 2020 research has successfully addressed the fact that gender issues have been poorly understood and largely neglected in waste management and most other environmental and technical sectors and highlights how sex and gender analysis can lead to innovation in this sector.
In particular, the case study analysed :
- The collection of data on gendered waste behaviors and the intervention to change user behaviors;
- The use of participatory gender mainstreaming to collect sex-disaggregated data on waste behaviors and to foster women’s participation in waste management.
The study concluded that the European Union and the Horizon 2020 projects have shown that integrating gender into urban policies and planning processes for waste management will help reduce waste and encourage a circular economy.
Gendered Innovations is a project initiated at Stanford University that harnesses the creative power of sex and gender analysis for innovation and discovery, based on the premises that considering gender may add a valuable dimension to research and it may take research in new directions.
