The University of Deusto held from July 8 to 11 a summer course, at international level, on inclusive mentoring experiences, a practice that has to do with the accompaniment to promote gender equality. Entitled “Unlocking knowledge, experience, and good practice in inclusive mentoring”, it was organized by the Equality Unit of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences and the action COST: Voices: Making Young researchers voices Heard for gender equality”. The official opening, on July 8, was attended by Trinidad Vicente, Director of Equality of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.

This “summer school”, which brought together young women researchers, equality, diversity and inclusion officers, administrative staff, activists and gender equality advocates, aimed to explore and promote best practices in mentoring, with a particular emphasis on intersectionality and inclusion. Three days of training, featuring case studies, workshops and discussions focused on mentoring in academia and science.

Specifically, the first day laid the groundwork for effective mentoring, highlighting inclusive practices and inspiring examples. The second day, meanwhile, focused on equipping practitioners and mentors with practical tools and knowledge, while the third session focused on co-creating innovative approaches to mentoring, applying lessons learned to different contexts.

Feminist Guided Tour

Featured speakers included Anne-Sophie Godfroy, president of CA VOICES, and Maria Lopez Belloso, co-leader of Working Group 1 at the University of Deusto, who gave lectures on the basics of mentoring and its application in different contexts. Other featured speakers: Liudvika Leišytė, Professor of Higher Education at TU Dortmund, and Stacy Johnson, Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham, who shared their insights on reverse mentoring and career development in research.
