French teachers from all over the Basque Country gather at a Conference on pedagogical training

Last 14 September, French teachers from all over the Basque Country took part in the first conference devoted to French language teaching entitled 'Journeé du franais Langue d'enseignement de la Communauté Autonome du Pays Basque'. This conference was hosted by the Centre of Modern Languages at the University of Deusto, in collaboration with the Basque Government and the French Embassy. The aim of this conference was to meet the pedagogical training needs of French teachers, both in state and private secondary establishments, and at Official Language Schools.

Roberto San Salvador, Vice-Rector for Communication, Language Policy and Student Affairs, Juan José Agirrezabala, Director for Educational Innovation of the Basque Government and Fabienne Lallement, Attaché for educational cooperation of the French Embassy and chairwoman of the DELF-DALF examining board, opened the activities that were held during this meeting, which included the presentation of the latest books by the main publishing houses.

One of the main aims of this conference is to promote the development of a network aimed at carrying out exchanges and initiatives related to the teaching of French as a foreign language, and to foster bilateral cooperation between Basque and French educational establishments. This meeting is framed within the collaboration agreement signed last 3 July between the University and the French Embassy in Spain.The agreementdesignatesDeustoas an approved Testing Centre for these examinations, which recognise the acquisition of the 6 levels of proficiency in French. The first exam sitting at the University of Deusto will be held next February 2008.

The Centre of Modern Languages at the University of Deusto will be the only accredited testing centre in Vizcaya for the different DELF-DALF examinations for both adults and juniors, awarded by the French Ministry of Education. The DELF (Diplme d'études de langue franaise) and DALF (Diplme approfondi de langue franaise) examinations are the official diplomas in French language awarded by the French Ministry of Education. They correspond to the 6 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe. The DELF/DALF exams correspond to 6 independent diplomas: DELF A1, DELF A2, DELF B1, DELF B2, DALF C1 and DALF C2. The other only accredited centre in the Basque Country is the French Alliance in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
