Bilbao will  host the headquarters of the Secretariat of the UN Local Coalition 2030, whose objective is to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level, promoting their development in each of the local and regional governments of the planet.

The priority of this global process of localization of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to root the Agenda in every local and regional government, promoting multilevel coherence and mobilizing multi-stakeholder and transdisciplinary public-private collaboration for an effective bottom-up implementation.

The main mission of the 2030 Local Coalition is to promote the development of the 2030 Agenda in regional and municipal institutions as 70% of actions related to climate change and its mitigation depend on sub-state institutions.

The submission of the Basque application was the result of a fruitful process of collaboration between the Basque Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, the Bilbao City Council and the BBK Foundation. The candidacy was officially submitted on July 11 at the High Level Political Forum (HPLF 2022) in New York.
