On 17 June, the Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute hosted the presentation of the UN study on children deprived of their liberty by Manfred Nowak, Professor of International Human Rights Law and Secretary General of the Global Human Rights Campus (Venice, Italy), and a large team of experts from all over the world.

A total of 274 children were interviewed to conduct this study and, according to the data collected in the research, more than 7 million children are currently living in situations of deprivation of liberty. In this regard, the study has made findings in six thematic areas where children are deprived of their liberty: juvenile justice, detention with primary caregivers, for migration reasons, in institutions, in the context of armed conflict or for reasons of national security.

The study also focused on the gender dimension, the impact on health and the reality of those with disabilities, as well as the opinions and views of the children themselves.
Manfred Nowak is Professor of International Human Rights Law and Secretary General of the Global Human Rights Campus (Venice, Italy), the largest academic network of universities working on human rights issues. He was UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from 2004 to 2010, and one of eight international judges at the Human Rights Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo from 1996 to 2003.
