Today, more than one billion people (approximately 15% of the world's population) live with some form of disability; 80% live in developing countries. The main theme of 2018 International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”, focusing on empowering persons with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda pledges to “leave no one behind”. Persons with disabilities, as both beneficiaries and agents of change, can fast track the process towards inclusive and sustainable development and promote resilient society for all, including in the context of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian action, and urban development. In line with the above, DEUSTO also joins this year the international celebration of this day with the aim of giving visibility to the capacities of the persons with disabilities, to eliminate stereotypes and prejudices. At this effect, DEUSTO will carry out the campaign “The only disability is the bad attitude” outlining inclusive education as a way to break barriers and create an inclusive society. Along with this, the University of Deusto reconfirms its commitment as an institution welcoming diversity, without exclusion and discrimination.
