Conrado Durántez, one of Europe's leading authorities on Olympism, donates to Deusto an important collection of Olympic-themed books

The former top athlete will also meet with the students on the Bachelor’s degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and students at the Deusto Hall of Residence.

The University of Deusto will feature Conrado Durántez, one of Europe's leading authorities on Olympism on Wednesday, 22 March. He will give a lecture entitled "El Olimpismo" at 10:00 in the Auditorium, as part of a session on Undergraduate Final Year Projects hosted by the Bachelor's Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences at the Faculty of Education and Sport.

Following this meeting with students, the former top athlete will donate a collection of Olympic-themed books to the University at the CRAI Library at 12:30 p.m. They will be available to the University community and to any researcher interested in consulting them. Rector José María Guibert and the Director of the Library, Xole Galarraga, will take part in the event. Afterwards, the expert in Olympism will participate with a group of university students from the Deusto Hall of Residence in a lunch discussion at the Hall itself.

Conrado Durántez is a magistrate and a Doctor of History, former President and founder of the Spanish Olympic Academy, President of the Spanish Pierre de Coubertin Committee, President of the Spanish Association of Olympic Philately, Honorary President of the Pan Iberian Association of Olympic Academies and Honorary President of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee. A member of the Culture Commission of the International Olympic Committee, he was pre-selected for the Rome 1960 Olympic Games in the Discus Throwing event, in which he was record holder for 15 years in Galicia and national runner-up.

He has published thirty-eight works on the history and philosophy of Olympism and is Doctor Honoris Causa of several American universities (United States and Cuba, among others). He holds, among other distinctions, those awarded by the International Olympic Committee (Olympic Order, Pierre de Coubertin Order and Sport and Education Trophy) as well as the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit of Spain, awarded by the Consejo Superior de Deportes.
