As a result of the Call for Reference sites 2016 launched in December 2015 at the Conference of Partners of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA), the application from the Basque Country has been awarded the highest recognition of EIP on AHA Reference Site 4 stars. The Reference Site status is granted to organisations who have demonstrated excellence in the development, adoption and scaling up of innovative practices for active and healthy ageing, in line with the strategic objectives of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) and particularly the European Scaling Up Strategy for Innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing.
Together with the University of Deusto, the Basque Ministries for Health and for Employment and Social Policies, the Provincial Council of Biscay and the Basque Public Health Service Osakidetza, as well as other actors, shape the Basque Country’s candidacy, that has demonstrated the existence of comprehensive strategies to advance innovation for active and healthy ageing, based on a "Quadruple Helix" model including stakeholders from industry, civil society, academia and government authorities at a regional and local level.
In December, Gunther H. Oettinger, European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society, will host a special ceremony in Brussels, at the second European Summit on Active and Healthy Ageing, to hand the Reference Site award to these standout regions excelling in innovation for active and healthy ageing.
