On 20 May 2020, the University of Deusto will launch the “Inspira STEAM at home” initiative, consisting of a cycle of live open interviews taking place every 15 days to give visibility to scientist and technologist women.
Inspira STEAM is a pioneering project with the aim of raising awareness of research, science and technology careers for girls and boys. Through sessions at school, children are taught what STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) careers consist of, which women have made great contributions throughout history, and they are provided with current examples of female scientists, experiments, etc. One of the main objectives is to create a relation of trust between the child and the mentor, to break stereotypes and preconceived ideas about science and technology. The project uses an approach of group mentoring to promote STEAM among children at Primary School.
The“Inspira STEAM at home” is born in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, that forced the suspension of the school sessions.
The first session will focus on the theme of “AI during the COVID-19 pandemic” and will count with the participation of Nerea Luis Mingueza. Nerea is expert in artificial intelligence and has participated in the creation of the official chatbot of the Ministry of Health to answer questions about the coronavirus.
The University of Deusto is promoting this initiative in collaboration with Innobasque-Basque Innovation Agency and counts with the funding support of the Provincial Councils of Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Álava, BBK, Roche, Barcelona Activa, Silk, HP Foundation and the City Council of San Sebastian. The hosts of the space are Lorena Fernández, Director of Digital Identity at the University of Deusto and member of the Interdisciplinary Research Platform on Gender and Estibaliz León, from Innobasque-Basque Innovation Agency.
