About a year ago, the International Research Projects Office (IRPO) began intense activity to take part in the European Commission’s pioneering initiative “European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing”, jointly with Basque Autonomous Community local and regional governments. The IRPO, together with the Faculty of Psychology and Education’s Transfer Unit, set up an interdisciplinary group formed by nine research teams from the university. It has met on a regular basis to share proposals and lines of work that focus on innovation to achieve more satisfactory ageing.
A collaborative strategy with Basque political figures and the European Commission has also enabled us to participate in the EIP and support the Basque Country’s candidacy as an elderly friendly environment. At the ceremony held in Brussels on 1 July, the European Commission confirmed the Basque Country as a reference site, awarding it the maximum three-star recognition. The decision was based on peer evaluation that examined the innovation, scalability, replicability and results of the 32 candidates, which have set examples of innovative active and healthy ageing strategies and practices that can be replicated in other European regions.
