    COURSE CONTENT

    This course will cover the following topics:

    • The Sociolinguistic Situation of Basque at the beginning of democracy, Reversal Language Shift efforts, and results.
    • The Basque language: an overview. Linguistic relatives, history and contacts with other languages, and a look at some of its distinctive features (‘Japanese-like’) head-last word order, cases and marking system and complex morphology, among others.
    • Basque, other European minority languages and language rights: European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, official status and political frameworks. The Law for Normalization of the Basque Language (BAC).
    • Communication and socialization processes of minority languages: the case of the revitalization of euskara in the context of the cultural values in the XX and XXIst centuries.Cultural policies of preservation and processes of (re)negotiation of Basque cultural identity, markers of identity and collective memory.

    YOUR COURSE PLAN

    STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

    The course is structured as follows: 

    INDUCTION: participants personal work to get initiated into the topic of the course.

    COURSE CONTENT: in order to work on the content, the course is divided in five sections. Each section combines one live video conference class, combined with online learning through resources and activities to be done before and after the video conference.

    CLOSING SESSION: 1 hour video conference session to sum up the program, solve questions arose during the course and provide general feedback about the requested activities.

    HOW YOU WILL LEARN

    METHODOLOGY

    The methodology of this course, as al Deusto Summer School courses, will be based on the University of Deusto Learning Model, adapted to distance learning. This model enables the autonomous learning of the students and encourages the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes, capacities and values.

    Use of learning materials in different formats for the presentation of theoretical content.

    Carrying out different learning activities to verify the acquisition of both theoretical and practical knowledge and the acquisition of skills.

    Monitoring of and supervision of the work of the students.
