José María Abrego, new Rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome

Father José María Abrego S.J. has been appointed new Rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He will take formal possession of his new position next September. José María Abrego was Rector of the University of Deusto from 1996 and 2003. He studied humanities in Salamanca, and obtained a BA in Philosophy from the Berchmanskolleg Faculty in Pullach (Munich). He studied Theology at Deusto, and the Sacred Scriptures in Jerusalem and Rome, in which he earned a PhD in 1982.News

Since 1977, he has been lecturer in Old Testament at the Faculty of Theology at Deusto, of which he has also been Secretary and Dean. In 1991, he took on his new position as Vice-Rector for Students Affairs, which he held until he was appointed Rector of Deusto in 1996. Some of his books include: 'Jeremías y el final del reino', 'La fuerza del bien. A propósito de Nah 3', Palabra y Vida, 'Teología del Antiguo Testamento: Perspectivas actuales', Iglesia Viva, and 'Reflexiones sobre el pecado en el Antiguo Testamento'. Since 2004, the new Rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome has worked at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Continuing Education at the University of Deusto.
