Nataša Rebernik graduated in 2008 in Community Engineering focusing on accessible public areas for wheelchair users, and in 2013 she defended her Master in Archaeology, by conducting a highly applicable interdisciplinary research on accessibility and inclusiveness of museological collections. Within the last 10 years she worked as a project manager and researcher in more than 20 national and international projects tackling societal challenges related to inclusion and accessibility of disabled people in public spaces, employment, education, tourism, culture etc. As a PhD candidate at the University of Deusto, her current focus is the research called “Social Cooperative Monitoring Tool for the Production of Inclusive Public Spaces”, specifically to fit the needs of disabled citizens. A Social Cooperative Monitoring Tool for the Production of Inclusive Public Spaces is a research project that is being conducted as a joint PhD research between University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain (Engineering for Information Society and Sustainable Development) and University of Antwerp, Belgium (Communication studies), and is supported by the Urban Planning Instituted of Republic of Slovenia. As a highly multidisciplinary research between computer engineering, anthropology, ethnography and urban studies it addresses inclusive public spaces design through the use of digital tools in order to encourage collaboration between public space users and public space agents. The research is grounded on Placemaking paradigm, Open-government, Smart and Inclusive Cities concepts. We use User-centred design, Ethnography and Behavioural mapping as core methodological approaches, and we address the societal challenges within through a 4-dimensional model that encompases a.) individual, b.) environmental / governmental, c.) technological, and finally d.) relational dimension. The main research aim is to understand the behaviours of public space users for the purpose of inclusive public spaces planning and design. Thus we aim to explore a set of research questions related to the perceptions, motivations and constraints that users face when using public spaces on the one hand, and digital tools on the other. Further on, we aim to explore also the array of existing digital tools in Smart cities contexts and the future trends in the area. Finally, a concept of a holistic, integrative, user-engagement digital tool (Social Cooperative Monitoring Tool) is being introduced, respecting user-experience design principles, by which disabled public space users will be supported in accessing public spaces, able to communicate their perceptions with the governments in the most possible participatory way, and being provided by a wide array of services and information for their improved inclusion into public sphere.
