A profession that can help to improve people’s lives. These are some of the activities carried out by social workers:

  • Intervene in social contexts mediating, helping, educating and defending.
  • Participate in shaping and evaluating social policy, services and social actions.
  • Advise in social conflict resolution
  • Contribute to proactive citizenship by empowerment and guaranteeing human and social rights.
  • Work on social conflict prevention
  • Contribute to the independence of people, families, groups, organizations and communities, with professionals from other areas.

 

 

Public administration and private sector jobs


The future graduate will have both options: public administration and the private sector. There is the possibility to work in town halls and communities, regional institutions, autonomous governments, foundations, NGOs and personal service companies.

Working with diverse people and groups

  • General social services: primary attention social work units in social services, civic centres, social emergency services, city shelters, management of social assistance programmes.
  • Childhood and family services: childhood, youth and family services, socio-educational intervention teams, day care centres, supervised flats, shelters, meeting points, foster family programmes, national/international adoption programmes and organisations.
  • The elderly day care centres, residences, community living projects, social events programmes for the elderly, assessment teams, guardianship institutions
  • Social exclusion: shelters for the homeless, assistance and guidance programmes for immigrants, mobile units, assistance to prisoners and former prisoners, recovery support centres, social aid programmes
  • Persons with disabilities: rehabilitation centres, disability assessment teams, day care centres, occupational workshops, victims' associations, disability employment services, guardianship institutes and foundations, socio-cultural events programmes
  • Housing subsidised and council housing (allotment of housing, mediation in evictions and neighbourhood disputes)
  • Business, private professional practice social assessment and management of personal services, social mediation, management of social projects, supervision of professionals, human resources
  • Employment job training programmes, job search services
  • Community development self-help associations, NGOs, development of community projects
