Adapting the business model to the international context and trends is the big challenge of the Basque companies

Active listening and analysis of the environment are key elements to ensure business competitiveness. This has been one of the main messages of the conference "Trends that transform", organised by Orkestra in the framework of the presentation of the Basque Country Competitiveness Report 2018. (Watch the video of the event).

The event gathered more than 150 renowned participants from the political and business world: Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, Christian Ketels (Chief Economist, Boston Consulting Group), Iñigo Ansola (Director General EVE), Mari Paz Robina ( Director Michelin), Iñaki Garmendia (Managing Director Ega Master), Josu Ugarte (Vice President Industry Schneider Electric).

One of the main messages was the need to address the specifics of the international context in order to tackle the competitiveness challenges that will arise in the future. At the same time, participants agreed that the competitiveness of the basque company depend not only of the company business strategy but also of the local agents’ support. The business future of the Basque Country will largely depend on the changes resulting from digitalisation and sustainability.

In line with this, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu demonstrated his commitment to promote those policies aimed at generating socioeconomic wealth and quality employment. Measures, that in Urkullu’s words, “should always seek social balance”.

The Competitiveness Observatory

The new Competitiveness Observatory was also presented at the event. The Competitiveness Observatory is a tool developed by Orkestra (Basque Institute of Competitiveness) which makes publicly available the latest data on the main competitiveness indicators. In Mari Jose Aranguren’s (director of Orkestra) words, the tool aims at "supporting anyone who works in the socio-economic improvement of our territory." It collects information from the main sources of available data and works with the objective of offering the user the possibility of measuring and contrasting the data in real time with other regions and countries.
