On 30 January 2020, a team of researchers from the Orkestra-Basque Institute of Competitiveness (University of Deusto) met in Brussels with other international renowned academic and scientific organisations to work out on the last details of a proposal for Horizon 2020 on the theme of citizen science. The group discussed new research approaches to take into consideration the citizen’s voices in science.
Usue Lorenz and Susana Franco were present at the meeting on behalf of DEUSTO and, in particular, the core group Open and Citizen Science of the Interdisciplinary Research Platform Strengthening Participation. This core group aims at promoting citizens’ engagement in the co-creation process of science. It uses, inter alia, multidisciplinary approaches and action research methodologies to promote social mobilisation and citizens’ empowerment. It focuses on the analysis of how societal actors, including young people and those at more vulnerable positions, behave, understand, react and interact with science.
