New Deustobarometer on citizens’ opinions and preferences: citizen insecurity becomes one of the main concerns in Euskadi

On 28 June 2019, the University of Deusto presented the results of the 12th edition of the Social Deustobarometer (DBSoc), a biannual survey on citizens’ opinions and preferences on the main issues of concern in the Basque society. According to this survey, the three main problems of Euskadi are unemployment (29%), pensions (28%) and poor working conditions (27%).

Deustobarometer results suggest that citizen insecurity (25%) becomes the fourth problem in Euskadi, registering a significant increase in the last 6 months. The immigration concern has dropped significantly to 18% in the same period of time. On the contrary, the interest for the Environment has gone up from 0.4% to 9% in the last 5 years.

Another fact: the concern for health has grown in the last year, going from 6% in the summer of 2018 to almost the double (11%) in 2019. Health care policy continues to be the policy most valued in Euskadi together with public transport.

At this occasion, Deustobarometer also offers data on how Basque citizens have lived the last elections or which parties they feel closest to each issue. In this regard, the survey indicates that the party that the Basque citizens feel closest to in their political positions is Unidos Podemos for Environment, Women's Rights, Immigration and Fiscal Policy. The PNV is the party in which most Basque citizens coincide in terms of economic development and to address the relationship between Euskadi and the Spanish State. In addition, the majority of Basque citizens believe that electoral campaigns are useless and do not trust what the political parties say when they seek their vote.
