Vitoria-Gasteiz has been awarded the Global Green City Award by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS). The GFHS is a not-for-profit organisation with the objective of building sustainable human settlements and promoting the United Nations Habitat Agenda. The Sustainable Cities And Human Settlements Awards (SCAHSA) is an annual worldwide prize supported by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is focused on promoting the mission of GFHS and enhancing the implementation of post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by recognising awardees and recommending their prominent progress and valuable experience over the course of a more sustainable goal.
During the the 14th GFHS held on 6 September at United Nations Conference Center in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Vitoria-Gasteiz was distinguished for the policies developed in the field of sustainability. It recognises the measures implemented in the city in favour of the sustainability of the environment, but also of citizenship and economy. The award confirms the commitment of Vitoria-Gasteiz with sustainability which has resulted in collaborative initiatives developed together with the University of Deusto such as the EU-funded project Movesmart on energy efficiency and personalised mobility.
