The Horizon 2020 SHAPE-ID (Shaping Interdisciplinary Practices in Europe) project, studying interdisciplinary and intersectoral practices in Europe, has identified the 6i model, developed in its first version at DEUSTO, as one of the most important practices for addressing interdisciplinary research and innovation in Europe. Thus, on 19 October 2020, the University of Deusto hosted the virtual workshop AI4Good (Artificial Intelligence for Good). This has been the last of a series of six planned SHAPE_ID workshops, the only one held in a non project partner institution.
Opened by DEUSTO Vice-Rector for Research and Transfer, Rosa Santibañez, the seminar analysed how the combined effects of globalisation and robotics ('globotics') and the emergence of more sophisticated autonomous artificial agents and social robots pose new scenarios that could generate both opportunities and threats as to the ethics, politics and dynamics of our social and working lives.
Designed as a hands-on multi-actor learning and co-creation workshop addressing AI challenges through inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration, the event gathered oncologists, engineers, designers, social pedagogists, physicists, experts on ethics of new technologies in security and health, policy makers, patients, citizens, companies and researchers. Over 60 participants contributed to the event with a clear commitment and willingness to share their perspectives, to debate, assess and imagine a human-centric future for Artificial Intelligence that maximises the benefits and minimises the risks of this impending reality.
Participants gathered and discussed three important topics (cancer, sustainable cities and security), where AI needs to be developed, deployed and used following safety features, transparency and accountability. They discussed AI4Good scenarios and strategies in the context of three Horizon 2020 projects in which the University of Deusto is collaborating with international and local organisations and that address problematic issues such as cancer BD4QoL (Big Data Models and Intelligent tools for Quality of Life for cancer survivors) and ATELIER (Amsterdam-Bilbao citizen driven Smart Cities); and TAILOR (Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in European Law Enforcement) proposal.
The breakout sessions were structured around three main elements:
- DEUSTO 6i model, which through its six dimensions (international, interdisciplinary, inter-sectoral, impact, innovation, and inclusion) offered the guiding collaborative and forward looking principles to frame the debate;
- Co-identification of societal needs and challenges specifically related to AI development;
- Co-definition of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research questions to foster cross-sectoral reflection on the societal challenges related to AI development.
