The European Parliament will host a day of reflection on the role of women in science on 25 September 2018. The event is organised by the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats and will be opened by the EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas. It aims to highlight the importance of including gender equality issues in the future European Research Framework Program, Horizon Europe.
Lorena Fernández, member of Deusto Interdisciplinary Research Platform on Gender and Director of Digital Identity, will participate in the event with an intervention addressing gender biases in new technologies, specifically in artificial intelligence. Lorena will analyse how large volumes of data reproduce sexist biases affecting not only the recognition of women's work and role in science, but also access to job offers or daily life situations, like negotiations with bank entities or insurers. For all these reasons, Lorena will highlight in her speech the importance of initiatives with girls and adolescents, such as the INSPIRA project, which seeks to empower girls and promote technological vocations.
Other speakers are Ángeles Heras, Spanish Government’s Secretary of State for Universities, Research and Innovation, and Iratxe García, Member of the European Parliament.
