DIRS-COFUND is based on the need to develop the profiles of researchers capable of leading high-quality research projects not only in the academic context, but also in public and private institutions, in which knowledge and innovation are key factors for success.

The project and doctoral programmes’ orientation and responsiveness to societal needs and challenges have resulted in well-established partnerships with several companies and institutions that are providing hosting and secondment opportunities to the researchers recruited within DIRS-COFUND projects, as well as training in research and T-shaped skills. Several of these institutions are also willing to co-fund relevant, impactful research projects that tackle challenges for communities, companies and public bodies.

In total DIRS-COFUND count with the active support of 68 partner institutions from all over Europe, United States of America and Ukraine. The project involves academic as well as non-academic partners from the private sector (business organisations, companies and SMEs), public administration, non-profit organisations, international networks and research centres. They work in different areas of knowledge, such as health and well-being, social justice and inclusion, creative cities and industries, democratic participation and competitiveness, following an interdisciplinary, collaborative and gender sensitive approach.
