Special Educational Needs

Course Programme

Methodology

Taught courses

Courses are focused on professional practice, with special emphasis on the use of proactive and participatory teaching methods. These include:

  • Workshops
  • Small group work
  • Group discussion
  • Video and case-study analysis


Tutorial sessions for internships, project works and Master’s final projects

Students are assigned a tutor who will assist them with their academic work, internship reports or Master's final project and will supervise their progress either in one-to-one sessions or by email.


Internships

Internships are mainly focused on:

  • Active participation in the different centres, where students will perform the following activities:
    • Psychopedagogical evaluation of the different educational needs.
    • Development and implementation of individual or group intervention programmes.
    • Access and knowledge of the community resources that enhance the quality of life, educational and social inclusion of people with special educational needs.
    • Analysis of the organisation, methods and actions that promote progress towards more inclusive education.
  • Internship report. Students undertaking an internship will have their progress formally reviewed both by an internship supervisor at the organisation and a tutor from their Faculty. This will help interns to reflect on their internship experience and write their conclusions on two reports, one for each internship.
     

Student Assessment

Assessment on this programme is made on a continuous basis and it is based on three main aspects:

  • Students will be required to carry out nine project works throughout the academic year, which will be assessed by their tutor through a personal interview. The assessment of the subjects Inclusive Education and Psychopedagogical Management of Specific Needs will be based on coursework and class attendance. The assessment process of these nine project works will run from October to May, according to the submission deadlines.
  • Marks for the subject External Internships in Special Educational Needs will be based on: students’ self-assessment, assessment by the internship supervisor at the host centre or the academic tutor. The academic tutor will visit the internship supervisor at the host centre. The assessment and grading of the two internships on this course will be made once both have been completed.
  • The assessment of the Master’s final project will be based on the student’oral defence of the project before an examining board made up of three members of the teaching staff on the Master's (70% of the mark), and a report from the Programme’s Director where the students’s overall work will be assessed (30% of the mark).

There are two examination sessions throughout the year. The first is held in February and the second in July, except for the Master’s final project, where one is held in July and the second in September.
