Academic staff

Proof of success of the Master’s degree across Spain

The Director of the Master’s in Port and Maritime Business Management and Maritime Law is Javier Larena, Law lecturer at the University of Deusto.

Since it was founded in 1982, the Basque Government Maritime Administration School has offered permanent retraining courses in Law and Port and Maritime Business Management through the University of Deusto, which has always expressed an interest in this discipline.

With a shared eagerness to broaden knowledge of port and maritime business management, the two institutions signed a collaboration agreement which led to the Master's degree in Port and Maritime Business Management and Maritime Law in 2000.

Positive results in over 10 graduating classes

The 10 graduating classes have proven that the decision to implement the programme has meant: that the founding principles, which mainly focus on constant retraining, have been strengthened.

A global approach and internships abroad

One of the key advantages is the programme’s global approach with content applicable in any area of the world. This is mainly due to the fact that a great many of the thematic concepts are subject to international regulations.

Therefore, international internships are often essential. The internships, which are compulsory according to the Master’s syllabus, reinforce the knowledge acquired in the classroom as students make contact with the realities of the industry.

Students from outside the Basque Community

The Master's degree in Port and Maritime Business Management and Maritime Law (official Spanish diploma) is popular on the university scene across Spain, which is demonstrated by the number of students coming from outside the Basque Country. 60% were from other autonomous communities in 2011.

An academic staff formed by experts on the European Union

Many of the lecturers on this programme are university professors, some of whom are from other Spanish and European universities. They form a reference group, backed by practising professionals from the field of Law and port and maritime firms.

The combination provides students with expert preparation for positions of responsibility in this field of transport.
