General Health Psychology

Overview

The Master’s degree

According to the seventh additional Provision of Public Health Act 33/2011, of 4 October, Spanish Official Gazette of 5 October 2011, on regulation of Psychology in the health care sector, these qualifications are required for graduates in Psychology who wish to practise the health care profession of General Health Psychology.

This Master’s degree focuses on training for this regulated profession and qualifies graduates to practise Psychology in different areas of the health care sector such as:

- Assessment centres
- Psychology centres
- Rehabilitation and drug treatment centres
- Associations for the sick and disabled
- Etc.

This licence is required to open a psychology centre.

The 2003 Public Health Act (LOPS 44/2003) regulated health care professions although it did not include Psychology in this category and only recognised Clinical Psychology specialists who had earned their licences via PIR examination (internship in Psychology).

As a result, the law did allow for psychologists to work in the health care field, in psychology offices, medical assessment centres, rehabilitation and drug treatment centres, associations for the sick and disabled, etc.

During the approval of the Public Health Act, the Congress of Deputies admitted a modification as an additional provision, creating the profession of General Psychologist in the health care sector (22/09/2011, Spanish Official Gazette 5/10/2011).
