Doctoral thesis

The doctoral thesis consists of an original research work created by the PhD candidate in a field of knowledge included in the PhD programme. The thesis can be written and defended in Spanish, Basque or English.

International Mention

1. The PhD diploma may include the International PhD Mention on the front, provided that the following requirements have been met:

  • (a) The doctoral candidate spent at least three months abroad, studying or researching in a higher education institution or prestigious research centre during the PhD programme. This stay may not be completed in the PhD candidate’s country of habitual residence. Stays and activities must be verified by the thesis supervisor, authorised by the Academic Committee and duly included in the PhD Activity Record.
  • Part of the doctoral thesis, at least the abstract and conclusions, must be submitted in one of the two most widely used languages for scientific communication in the field of knowledge concerned. Official languages in Spain will not be accepted except in the case of stays, reports and experts from Spanish speaking countries.
  • At least two experts from a non-Spanish higher education institute or research centre must have submitted reports on the thesis.
  • A least one expert PhD from a foreign higher learning institution or research centre who is not in charge of the stay mentioned in section (a) must have sat on the examining board.

2. The application for International PhD should be submitted with the thesis, together with the documents providing proof that the requirements mentioned above have been met. The Academic Committee of the programme must approve the suitability of the experts submitting reports on the thesis in a written reasoned statement.

The thesis defence should be done at the university where the PhD candidate is enrolled. In the case of joint PhD degree programmes, it can be done at any of the partner universities or in compliance with the terms contained in the collaboration agreement.
