Generic competences

  • Acquire the necessary knowledge and understanding to develop and/or apply innovative ideas, often in a context or research and innovation.
  • Apply the knowledge acquired and problem-solving capacity in new or little known settings within wider (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the subject area.
  • Integrate knowledge and face up to the complex task of forming an opinion from information which, although incomplete or limited, includes reflection on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of knowledge and judgements.
  • Ability to communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences in clear and unambiguous terms.
  • Develop the learning skills to continue with independent study.

Specific competences

The aim of this Master’s course is to equip students with a basic framework of ten professional competences. (60 ECTS).

  • C1 Know, analyse, reflect on and apply the methodologies and resources in fields related to drug dependencies (pharmacology, psychopathology, prevention, education, social reinsertion, treatment, medicine and the legal scope) in addition to the regulatory and political models and frameworks.
  • C2 Design, coordinate and plan strategies for universal, selective, indicated and specific prevention, adapted to the target population (including knowledge and methods to reduce damage and risks). Make decisions to achieve the objectives being pursued.
  • C3 Formulate treatment and/or insertion objectives based on accurate assessment and one’s own professional competences, draw up intervention schemes (prevention, rehabilitation, reinsertion, etc.) and manage and refer cases and beneficiaries.
  • C4 Work on multidisciplinary teams, displaying an understanding of the role and competences of each professional, valuing how the disciplines involved in the project contribute and are complimentary. Demonstrate the capacity to identify the limitations of each discipline.
  • C5 Propose, design and implement solutions to problems and complex cases, presenting solid arguments on the principles and criteria underpinning decisions and judgements. Identify the possibilities and limitations of the intervention, demonstrating a capacity for innovation and pursuit of quality.
  • C6 Value the social and ethical implications of intervention in drug dependencies, showing unwavering respect and defence of human rights, principles of democracy, equality between men and women, social commitment, environmental protection, universal accessibility and design for all. Foster the culture of peace and respect for diversity and religious plurality, being especially sensitive to the needs of the most socially vulnerable people or those at risk of drug abuse.
  • C7 Effectively interact with drug users, persons affected by drug dependencies or at risk. Work with social mediators, family members, colleagues and other professionals to achieve this. Show empathy and use interpersonal communication skills to set up support relationships and solve conflicts.
  • C8 Know and use the bibliographic sources and documents on drug dependencies
  • C9 Communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual means in different formats (i.e. essays, correspondence, technical papers, different types of reports, group discussions, debates, conferences, talks) pursuing different objectives (i.e. inform, defend, explain, persuade, discuss and teach) for different groups, including, when necessary, an academic and professional style of communication (theoretical references, standardised quotes, etc.)
  • C10 Value the importance that life long learning (continuous training, recycling and self-directed learning) plays in professions related to drug dependencies and the flexibility this training provides, which is needed to achieve personal and professional development adapted to new situations and the evolution of knowledge, science and society.
