Types of Visas

To enter Spain you will need a Student Visa. Depending on the duration of your stay, there are two types of Student Visa:

  1. For 180 days or less (student will not be eligible for a Residence Card in Spain)
  2. For more than 180 days, long-stay visa (student will be eligible for a Residence Card in Spain)

It is recommended that you apply for a long-stay visa (Type D) with multiple entries and for a period exceeding 180 days. When applying for your visa, it is important that you specify that you need a visa for the entire duration of your study programme. This type of visa will enable you to ask for a residence permit when arriving in Spain.

For further information, contact Martín Urkijo Unzurrunzaga at martin.urquijo@deusto.es

NOTE: Once you have entered Spain, it is not possible to change a 180-day study visa into a multiple-entry or longer-stay visa from within Spain

Residence Permit

If you have been granted a long-stay visa (student visa for more than 180 days) you are eligible for a residence permit. Getting your residence permit will allow you to stay and travel within the Schengen Zone for a year, with no need of going back to your home country and/or apply for any other visa whenever you want to enter a different Schengen country for a short visit. It is important that you contact the Spanish Embassy in your home country and ask for the requirements to be awarded this kind of visa. To set up an appointment to apply for your residency permit, please contact your programme coordinator.
