Halls of Residence have a long tradition. The 14th, 15th and 16th centuries make up their classical times. Originally, most of the universities which were founded in Spain and America were Halls of Residence. After centuries of decline, the 1942 University Organisation Act restored Halls of Residence. The School of Higher Education, which was the origin of the University of Deusto and was created as a boarding school in 1886, became the Deusto Hall of Residence in 1961.
When Deusto was officially recognized as a University and started its expansion, more space was required for university activity. For this reason, in 1967 the Deusto Hall of Residence moved to a new location built on the slopes of mount Artxanda. Thirty-three years after being built, its rooms have been refurbished. They are now fully-equipped with bathroom, internet and e-mail connection, telephone and piped music, and they have new and functional furniture. Important figures in areas such as the arts, law, economics and politics stayed at the former boarding school and Hall of Residence, but the most prominent one among them was Brother Francisco Gárate, caretaker for forty years who was later beatified.
